Opinion The fear: the land army is not fit for war now Israel today

The concept of a "small and efficient IDF", the reserve units that have lost their offensive capability and the regularly low standards • Major General and former Soldier Acceptability Commissioner Yitzhak Barik in a special column about falling asleep while on guard - which may be expensive

Since 2006, the four chiefs of staff who have served since then have inscribed on their flag the concept of a small, technological, high-quality army with offensive capabilities.

This concept arose from the concept that the great wars are over: we have peace with Egypt and Jordan, Syria (in 2006) was not relevant , and in front of Israel stood two small terrorist militias that did not threaten Israel.

Since then, the terrorist militias in Gaza and Lebanon have turned into terrorist armies equipped with about 150,000 missiles and rockets, and with 16,000 infantry fighters who are equipped with the best weapons, including anti-tank missiles.

The Syrians have returned to the sector, and are building their army with the help of the Russians.

Pro-Iranian Shiite militias capable of launching missiles and rockets at Israel are found in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

In Judea and Samaria, terrorism has intensified to the extent of tens of thousands of armed men, and within Israel itself, riots by thousands of radical Arabs and Bedouins who may carry weapons in the next war are expected.

All of this did not affect the concept of the Chiefs of Staff, which was fatal to the security of the citizens of Israel, and they continued to cut the size of the army.

If that's not enough, the reserve units in the already small land army have lost their ability to fight due to lack of training and failure to implement new weapons.

In fact, in their current state, they are not capable of launching an attack inside Lebanon, and without them there is no possibility of carrying out such an attack, which could also lead to the outbreak of regional fighting in five arenas at the same time - something that would require the IDF to place ground units for defense in those arenas, since the size of the army does not allow this.

The IDF has a significant Achilles' heel in the regular units as well. Chief of Staff Kochavi's ideas to establish a multidimensional combat combining air and land did not gain momentum, and are the property of only a few units.

Most of the regular units have not implemented this concept, and even the few that have - lose their capabilities with the replacement of commanders and soldiers in the units.

Lack of discipline in the regular units

In addition to this, the regular units today are plagued by lack of discipline, lack of control and monitoring, failure to verify orders, lack of handling of difficult criticisms, lack of learning lessons and their application, and unreliable investigations.

Today it is an organization that does not learn, without continuity and continuity, with low standards and a culture of unreliable reports.

All of these will not allow the IDF to launch a ground attack in Lebanon.

Most of the armor units in the reserves have not implemented the CID system that is found in every tank, which enables command and control, the management of the war and hitting targets on the battlefield. Without knowledge of the operation of the CID system, their function is similar to the ability of a headless person to function.

According to Kochavi's multidimensional concept, any battalion-sized unit, including regular armored battalions, should be able to operate drones to gather intelligence, fire artillery at targets, and operate aircraft.

It is a complex operation, and there are currently only a few units capable of it.

Most of the regular armored battalions are not skilled in this, although according to the chief of staff it is a necessary condition for entering the attack. In presentations it looks wonderful, but in the field the situation is much different.
