Saving energy pays off: Not only with the electricity bill, but now also with a bonus in Munich.

The public utilities pay an energy saving premium.

Munich – Those who turn down their heating will be rewarded: the municipal utilities pay Munich residents an energy saving bonus.

The company announced this on Tuesday.

The Greens had previously submitted a corresponding application.

It is now planned that SWM will reward savers in a kind of competition.

Households that undercut their energy consumption from the previous year by at least ten percent receive 50 euros, those who save 20 percent receive 100 euros.

"The situation is serious," said SWM boss Florian Bieberbach on Tuesday.

Everyone would have to save energy to overcome the crisis.

"The competition should provide an incentive for this."

Deadline is October 1st.

By then, a website will be created on which every SWM customer can register for the energy saving competition.

The next annual bill – electricity or gas – is then compared with the previous one.

Particularly economical households that manage to use less than half of the average consumption (electricity or gas) should be credited the bonus immediately, since a further reduction in energy consumption would be unrealistic.

“This is how we manage to avoid energy poverty in Munich and save energy at the same time”

The terms and conditions can be found on the competition website from October 1st.

The Stadtwerke will announce the address in good time.

"A responsible energy policy must take care of both," says Green Party leader Dominik Krause.

“Both about security of supply for all Munich residents and incentives to save energy.

“We therefore welcome the SWM energy-saving competition, which is scheduled to start in autumn.

This is how we manage to avoid energy poverty in Munich and save energy at the same time.”

The SPD had criticized the Greens' initiative at party level, party leader Christian Köning spoke of not wanting to subsidize villa owners.

But both factions had emphasized that they were working on a solution.

SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner said: "We as the SPD take care of the people who cannot pay their heating bills.

In view of the shortage of supply, it is right that the Greens' proposal to give prizes for saving energy is now being implemented.

All in all, this is a successful socio-ecological policy.”
