The Prime Minister told the French President that Israel opposes returning to the agreement and noted that "it will continue to do everything to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear capability" • Lapid warned that the proposal contains new elements that go beyond the boundaries of the original nuclear agreement signed in 2015 • The Prime Minister's office reported that Macron emphasized in the conversation his commitment to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Israel's political blitz against the nuclear deal continues:

Prime Minister Yair Lapid spoke today (Monday) with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Lapid made it clear to President Macron that Israel opposes returning to the agreement and will not be committed to it: "Israel will continue to do everything in order to prevent Iran from reaching nuclear capability."

The Prime Minister's Office reported that the French President emphasized in the conversation his commitment to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

"The leaders talked at length about the Iranian nuclear issue. The Prime Minister reiterated Israel's opposition to returning to the agreement and reiterated the need for a clear message that there will be no further concessions with the Iranians," the Prime Minister's statement said.

Prime Minister Lapid emphasized that "the Iranians continue to conduct negotiations on a proposal that was put before them in the Take it or leave it examination."

It was also reported that the Prime Minister warned that the proposal contains new elements that go beyond the limits of the original nuclear agreement signed in 2015 and that it will pave the way for the injection of large amounts of capital into the terrorist system and the military strengthening of Iran.

As a reminder, last Thursday Israel launched a diplomatic blitz with the aim of preventing at the last minute the signing of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the US. Prime Minister Lapid held an intensive round of talks on the Iranian issue on Thursday. US Ambassador to Israel Tom Neides.

On top of that, the head of the MLA, Eyal Hulta, is going to the US this week for a round of talks on behalf of the Prime Minister.

The negotiations that are currently underway with Iran are not about improving the original nuclear agreement from 2015, but about narrowing it down. US President Joe Biden has already said that he agrees to return to the original agreement, but the Iranians demand that the restrictions imposed be further offset on them.

The negotiations with Iran - a snapshot:

The Iranian demands to which the Americans have already given their consent include the following points:

  • Complete removal of the economic sanctions, which will be worth 275 billion dollars to the Iranian economy in the first year, and about a trillion dollars by 2030.

  • Iran will be able to keep the new centrifuges it developed against the rules of the original agreement, which will give it the ability to break into the bomb once it makes such a decision.

  • The expiration date of the agreement will not change despite the time that has passed.

This means that the restrictions on the nuclear program will begin to expire in the coming years, and by 2031 there will be no restrictions left on Iran, which will be free to develop a nuclear bomb.

  • No restrictions will be imposed on Iran's ability to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

  • Russia will be able to build new nuclear reactors in Iran in exchange for billions of dollars, despite the sanctions imposed on it for the war in Ukraine.

It is still unclear what will happen to the military sanctions that prohibit Russia from selling to Iran military equipment in which it has expressed interest, which includes, among other things, tanks, fighter jets and advanced air defense systems capable of endangering Air Force aircraft.

The Iranian demands that are currently on the negotiating table include the following points:

  • The lifting of sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards' giant corporation, "Hatam al-Anbiya" - this is the construction and engineering arm of the Revolutionary Guards, which carries out its largest and most complex projects for the organization, and is one of its main sources of income.

This is actually an Iranian compromise proposal in the face of the US refusal to completely remove the Revolutionary Guards from the State Department's list of terrorist organizations.

  • The closure of the IAEA's open investigation files against Iran regarding three sites where uranium remains were discovered. The closure means a de facto acceptance of prohibited nuclear activity within Iran's territory and further deterioration of the IAEA's position.

  • Receiving economic guarantees from the USA and Europe so that a future American administration will not withdraw from the agreement, as President Trump did in the past. This is an old demand, but an American agreement has not yet been reached regarding it, although there seems to be progress on the issue.

  • Another demand, which has not been officially raised, is an American waiver of any moves against Iran for the Revolutionary Guards' plans to assassinate the former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, and the American envoy for Iran, Brian Hawke.

Prisoner exchange and lifting of sanctions: Iran reached compromises with the US

As a reminder, it was reported in the "Iran International" newspaper yesterday that the US agreed to a series of compromises that could seal the fate of the negotiations with Iran. According to the London-based media outlet with an anti-establishment line, a detailed list with a number of compromises was circulated in recent days among the most hawkish camp in the leadership Iranian, close to President Ibrahim Raisi, and at the center of it is described a plan according to which the parties will start implementing the agreement for a period of 120 days.

In addition to this, the list includes prisoner exchanges and also the cancellation of sanctions on 17 banks and 150 financial institutions in Iran, as well as the thawing of the funds of the Islamic Republic which are frozen in accounts in South Korea, an amount estimated at seven billion dollars.

As a reminder, the deadline that the European representatives set for Tehran in an effort to revive the original 2015 nuclear agreement expired last Monday.

The parties insisted that this is the last chance to reach an agreement after months of discussions within the framework of the "Vienna talks" which included nine rounds.
