The joint gas purchase projects mentioned in the spring by Brussels and the French EU presidency have remained in limbo.

Third supplier of natural gas to the European Union behind Russia and Norway, Algeria is particularly coveted for the riches of its subsoil since the invasion of Ukraine.

On a visit to Algiers, Emmanuel Macron, however, wanted to minimize the stakes for France, which is less dependent on gas than its Italian or German neighbors.

It must be said that Italy did not wait long to secure additional volumes of Algerian methane.

From April, Mario Draghi, the head of government, crossed the Mediterranean, accompanied by the boss of the energy group ENI.

ENI has signed a contract with the Algerian public operator Sonatrach for the purchase of additional gas, starting this year, with a ramp-up of up to 9 billion additional cubic meters (Bncm) in 2023 and the same in 2024. italy was already importing 21 billion mdsm, nearly half of Algeria's gas sales to the European Union.
