In just seven months, prices in the Balearic Islands have increased by 35 percent.
Basic foods such as milk, pasta or rice in particular have become more expensive - and not without reason.
Mallorca - A purchase in the supermarket in Mallorca and the other islands of the Balearic Islands has become more expensive by more than a third in the first seven months of the year.
Prices rose by 34.7 percent during this period, as the Balearic consumer organization Consubal announced on Monday.
Sunflower oil, eggs, milk and pasta in particular have apparently become more expensive.
Consubal provided the explanation at the same time.
Food that was previously cheap is becoming more expensive due to increased demand
In the first seven months of the year, eggs rose by 31 percent, milk and pasta by 24 percent and rice by 23 percent, according to the Balearic Consumers' Organisation.
When it comes to sunflower oil, consumers currently have to dig deep into their pockets: the price has gone up by around 75 percent.
Inflation has made everything more expensive, explained the head of Consubal, Alfonso Rodríguez, according to the
Mallorca Zeitung
.
That's why many families have switched to cheaper products, "such as sunflower oil, which is much cheaper than other oils," says Rodríguez.
"If the demand increases so much, the prices rise again," the head of the consubal explained the dilemma.
How exactly the organization determines the prices is not clear from the report.
The price increase recorded for the Balearic Islands in the first seven months of the year is well above the European and Spanish average.
According to the Eurostat statistics office, inflation in the euro zone was 8.9 percent in July compared to the same month last year - a record value since the euro was introduced as book money in 1999. The price increase for food and luxury goods had risen from 8.9 to 9.8 percent accelerated.
Meanwhile, in Spain, annual inflation was 10.8 percent in July.
Situation could worsen further in autumn and winter
The Mallorca holiday is therefore becoming more expensive for tourists and there is no end in sight: the head of the Consubal assumes that interest rates on mortgages, as well as the prices for rent and electricity, will rise in autumn and winter.
These price increases in connection with the already very high energy and fuel costs are also a problem for many families on Mallorca.
Consubal warned that parents in particular would be heavily burdened because they would have to buy expensive teaching materials when school started in September.
Many people have had to compromise on quality when shopping for food because of the increased prices and opt for cheaper products instead.
This represents a health risk for consumers, according to Consubal.
Good savings tips seem to be scarce in these times.
Consubal appealed to "common sense" in this regard and warned consumers not to get into debt.
The consumer organization advises consumers to keep their hands off quick loans in particular.
