The World Meteorological Organization revealed today that forecasts show great potential for the continuation of drought conditions at above average levels, as it seems almost certain that the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in more than 40 years will continue.
"Unfortunately, our forecast models for the period between October and December show to a high degree that we are entering the fifth season in a row," Reuters quoted Gouled Artan, director of the IGAD Center for Climate Prediction and Applications, a regional center for the World Meteorological Organization in East Africa, as saying.
Without rain in the Horn of Africa,” he said, adding, “In Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, we are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”
The latest forecasts confirm the concerns of aid agencies, which have been warning for months of the worsening consequences of drought in Ethiopia, Somalia and parts of Kenya, including the threat of famine in Somalia.
