Pope Francis formally installed 20 new cardinals at the Vatican on Saturday, including San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy.
McElroy, 68, is the only new cardinal from the United States in a group that includes bishops from the Amazon, Paraguay, East Timor, Singapore, India and an Italian bishop serving in Mongolia.
Pope Francis expressed his concern over the arrest of a bishop in Nicaragua and called for peaceful coexistence and dialogue
With this new group of cardinals, Francis has now elected 83 of a total of 132 cardinal electors, those under the age of 80 who are eligible to vote in a conclave, according to the Vatican Press Office.
Right now, the United States has the second-highest number of cardinal electors, 10, after Italy, which has 20. However, these numbers change once a cardinal turns 80 and is no longer eligible to vote in a conclave. .
