Was Mikhail Gorbachev the Hermann Müller of the Soviet Union?

Did he play the same ungrateful role as the German foreign minister who signed the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 - and later served as chancellor several times?

Both recorded a defeat, the other a failure whose reality their countries finally refused to recognize.

Like a majority of Germans in the post-14-18 era, Russians today consider that it is not the fault of Russian society if the Soviet federation was dismantled, but the fault of a small group of traitors.

Gorbachev being the first of them.

Continuing the analogy: Russia in the 1990s had its Weimar period with Boris Yeltsin.

Then there was the takeover with Vladimir Putin.

And here we are in 2022.

This analogy comes to mind when reading the conclusion of Anna Colin Lebedev's excellent book which analyzes with finesse the divergence between Russian and Ukrainian society:
