"I didn't think I would experience such a huge experience, with an apology from the President of Germany, when they admit their responsibility, that they should have done more - it's just a shame that it didn't happen when it should have happened • A special column by the swimmer Shlomit Nir-Tor who participated in the state ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the massacre She

We had a very long and exciting day, 50 years after the murder of the Munich martyrs.

I was a young swimmer and I went through an experience that cannot even be described.

Today, when I am here again, it brings up thoughts of how it happened, how nothing was done to prevent it.

The terrible things that happened, and that killed the Olympic idea, with athletes who come to do their best, but realize that everyone is different and everyone needs to be given a place.

They prepared an extraordinary welcome for us, they went out of their way, with care that I've never had the chance to receive - it's a feeling that it's good, but maybe too late.

It didn't happen when it should have happened.

My last memory from here is of course the murder.

At the time, Germany wanted to show that it had changed.

It was pastoral, with lawns and flowers, a meeting with athletes from all over the world, a dining room with an unbelievable selection - it was a special feeling, until I returned to the village and heard about the terrorists.

I was in different residences, I got up early in the morning and saw from the window armored personnel carriers who had come to guard us.

I didn't wake Esther (the Israeli athlete Esther Roth Shahmarov) and I couldn't get in touch with the delegation, until the head of the delegation came and told us.

The ceremonies were extraordinary, and I didn't think I would have such an overwhelming experience, with an apology from the President of Germany, admitting their responsibility, that they should have done more.

Lucky that the families announced in their struggle that they are not coming until they receive the proper compensation.

We saw and felt that an unprecedented action was taken here, including the Israeli Olympic Committee that brought 110 members of the delegation, the partners in the disaster and the President Herzog who came here.
