Buckingham Palace announced today the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96, after she ruled Britain for 70 years.

"The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon and the funeral will take place 10 days later," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, 73, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country through mourning as the new king of Britain automatically and leader of the Commonwealth of 14 other countries including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

The Queen's family had met her where she was at Balmoral Castle, where she has been residing since last July, due to growing fears about her deteriorating health.

The late Queen met last Tuesday with Liz Terrace to appoint her as a new prime minister after she received Boris Johnson to accept his resignation, thus occupying the fifteenth position among the prime ministers appointed by the Queen during the seven decades of her rule from Anthony Eden in 1955 to the presidency of 2022.

It is noteworthy that the late Queen was born in 1926 in London and ascended the British throne on February 6, 1952, and was crowned queen on June 2, 1953. The British celebrated the seventieth platinum jubilee of her accession to the throne last July.
