Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, Harry and Meghan's children now bear the titles of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

The change is due to conventions created more than a century ago.

Under rules established by George V in 1917, the monarch's grandchildren automatically receive royal titles.

As grandchildren of King Charles III, Archie and Lilibet now have the right to be a prince and princess.

Something for which they did not immediately qualify as great-grandchildren of the queen.

Last year, Meghan hinted that this title might be denied to Archie due to his mixed-race ancestry.

In an interview with broadcaster Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex said a member of the royal family had expressed "concerns and conversations about how dark (Archie's) skin might be when she was born."

"That was passed on to me by Harry. Those were conversations the family had with him," Meghan added.

However, she refused to reveal who was involved in those conversations.

"That would be very detrimental to them," she said.

Meghan added that these comments were made at the same time they were informed that Archie would not have security or an official title.

She said there were also "talks" while she was pregnant about changing the convention once Charles became king, meaning Archie would lose his right to a title.

Meghan insisted to Winfrey that her concern over her son's right to the title of prince was linked to her wanting him to have police protection.

Lilibet was born after the interview was conducted.

Buckingham Palace told CNN at the time of Archie's birth in 2019 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had decided not to use any title for their son.

Meghan rejected that suggestion in her interview with Winfrey, saying: "It's not our decision, is it?"

There have been no indications that the king intends to make any changes to the convention.

Harry and Meghan announced in 2020 that they would be stepping back from royal duties and "working towards becoming financially independent."

It was agreed that they would remain part of the family, but would not be active and serving members and would have their honorary military appointments and royal patronages revoked.

Charles' son Harry is unlikely to be offered a royal role unless he and Meghan resume their duties.

While several members of the royal family, including Harry, traveled to Balmoral Castle on Thursday after Buckingham Palace announced its "concern" about the queen's condition, Meghan did not accompany her husband.
