2022-09-12T18:50:18.443Z

Copenhagen is preparing to make an agreement for its asylum seekers to be transferred to Rwanda before the examination of their file. The same project, initiated by the United Kingdom, has so far experienced many legal adventures.

In 2021, Denmark had already passed a law authorizing the relocation of asylum seekers outside the European continent: this policy is confirmed as Copenhagen announced on Friday, September 9, that it had signed a bilateral declaration for an agreement with Rwanda.

The intention of the two countries is to consider "

the establishment of a program by which asylum seekers arriving in Denmark could be transferred to Rwanda for the study of their asylum file

", specifies the press release of the ministry. Danish Foreign Affairs.

Applicants for asylum in Denmark should always personally submit an application upon arrival at the Danish border control, before being flown to another country.

This plan also includes “

the option of settling in Rwanda

” in the event that the asylum application is refused.

The same project, between the United Kingdom and Rwanda, has been controversial for a year.

Prince Charles - now King Charles III - himself had come out of the traditional monarchical reserve, saying he was "dismayed" at the British government's plan to deport asylum seekers who arrived illegally in the United Kingdom to Rwanda.

Last Monday, justice was again examining the appeal of associations against this controversial project, which however intends to defend at all costs Liz Truss, designated that same day to succeed Boris Johnson at Downing Street.

This is not the first time that Rwanda wants to sign such agreements with countries subject to a large number of asylum applications.

For what interest?

Behind the humanist intentions put forward, these agreements are an economic opportunity for the State of the Great Lakes region.

Thanks to British compensation, the operation will have no consequences on the national budget, assured the authorities.

In addition, the United Kingdom has promised an initial envelope of 120 million pounds sterling (145 million euros) both for the implementation of the project and for development aid to the country, ranked 14th most poor in the world.

As for Denmark, derided by the European left, the Social Democrats there have been pursuing a policy resolutely aimed at reducing migratory flows for several years now - to the point that the Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, is more and more frequently compared to her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban.

The Scandinavian country believes that it is playing its survival there: supporters of a very generous social model, the Danes fear that this protection is threatened by an unreasonable openness.

And above all fear, more than anything, the installation of mass unemployment which would deal a fatal blow to their welfare state.
