Muhammad Kiwan fled from police officers during riots in Wadi Ara • A police officer shot at the vehicle he was traveling in fearing that it was a run-over attack • The police claim that under the circumstances the shooting "was justified" • His father: "The police investigation department mistreated us"

The family members of Muhammad Kiwan, who was killed at the age of 17 during the Wall Guard operation about two years ago (May 2021) by a policeman's gunfire - are angry with the Police Investigations Department (PID) after they were informed this morning (Thursday) that the case against the policeman was closed.

The MoH says that they thoroughly investigated the incident and after a comprehensive examination of the evidence and all the circumstances, it was decided to shelve the case. It was found that under the circumstances of the case, the shooting, in itself, was justified. At the same time, as far as the manner of the shooting is concerned, the evidence does not allow to base findings on the level required in relation to some of the facts of the event and its circumstances and therefore, as mentioned, the case is closed.

Laviv Kiwan Mahamid, Muhammad's father said in response: "It took them a year and a half to abuse us. A policeman shoots a child and kills him and they want us to believe in the justice systems of the police investigation department."

"Every policeman is backed up blindly"

We will remind that in the midst of the "Guardian of the Walls" operation, violent civil riots took place at the Mi-Ami intersection in Wadi Ara, during which a fire was lit and stones were thrown at civilians by rioters.

Upon the arrival of the security forces who were called to the scene, the rioters began to flee towards a dirt parking lot located nearby.

Muhammad and two others got into the car, with Kiwan sitting next to the driver, and they fled the scene.

Upon exiting the parking lot, the vehicle hit a policeman who was on the scene, but despite this continued to drive fast and even swerved in the direction of the suspect - one of the policemen who came to deal with the incident.

The suspect, who believed that he was in the midst of a life-threatening incident and even feared that it was a run-over attack, fired two shots at the vehicle in order to stop it.

One of the bullets penetrated the vehicle and hit Mahamid in the head which resulted in his death.

Chairwoman of the Committee for the Advancement of Women's Status and Gender Equality, MK Aida Toma-Soliman: "The decision of the Police to close the case against the policeman who killed the student Ahmed Kyouan Mahamid in Umm al-Fahm proves once again that the state blindly backs every policeman and neglects the lives of citizens The Arabs. After the Police Department decided to close the case, it's time to close the Police Department - the department for covering up police crimes."

The Moussawa association, which works for equality between Arab and Jewish society, said: "47 unarmed Arab citizens were shot over the years by police officers, in only two cases were charges filed that ended in ridiculous punishments.

This is about a light hand on the trigger of the police officers in an encounter with an Arab citizen.

In a whole system, both the police, the police and the prosecutor's office fail to fight police violence."
