More than a thousand people formed a human chain around the British Parliament in London today, to demand the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
And Agence France-Presse reported that the participants in the series, raised realistic-sized models of Assange, and banners reading "Release Assange", "Stop the extradition process", "The press is not a crime", and "Prosecute the perpetrators of war crimes, not Assange."
Assange, who was born in Australia, has been in a maximum security prison since 2019, and he has filed an appeal against the British government's decision to extradite him to the United States.
The human chain formed in front of the Houses of Parliament extended to the River Thames and Westminster Bridge, down to the river opposite the historic building.
The 51-year-old Assange is being pursued in the United States, after he published in 2010 more than 700,000 classified documents about the activities and crimes of the US military around the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, on WikiLeaks.
Assange faces the possibility of a prison sentence of dozens of years, if extradited to the United States.
