A new state parliament will be elected in Lower Saxony on Sunday.

According to the latest polls, the SPD is confident of victory, and Chancellor Scholz was also there in Hanover on Saturday.

Hanover – Shortly before the state elections on Sunday, the SPD with Lower Saxony's current Prime Minister Stephan Weil is confident of victory.

In the most recent polls, the SPD was just ahead of the CDU, while the Greens took third place.

But the CDU is also still confident that it has the chance of becoming the strongest force in the elections on Sunday with its chairman Bernd Althusmann.

Lower Saxony: Chancellor Scholz supports party friend Weil before state elections

In the state elections on Sunday, a total of 6.1 million people can vote for a new state parliament.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz also traveled to Hanover and supported the SPD in their election campaign on Saturday afternoon, as did the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer.

The SPD won the most recent polls with 31 to 32 percent of the votes.

The party was just ahead of the CDU (27 to 30 percent), followed by the Greens (16 to 19 percent).

With 9 to 11 percent in the polls, the AfD could improve to a double-digit result, while the FDP has to tremble when it comes to the state elections (5 percent).

The left (3 to 4 percent) was just below the five percent hurdle.

Althusmann emphasized on Saturday that despite the latest poll numbers, the result of the elections is still open.

"Surveys are not always right either, we last saw that in NRW," said the chairman of the CDU in Lower Saxony.

There are still many voters who still have to make a decision about who they want to vote for on Sunday.

The SPD currently governs in Lower Saxony with the CDU, but Weil is hoping for a red-green coalition.

Weil had already governed with the Greens in his first term.

Before Lower Saxony's state elections: the energy crisis and inflation determine the SPD's election campaign

Key themes in the speeches by Weil, Scholz and Dreyer were the energy crisis and high inflation and its effects, while aspects of state politics such as a shortage of teachers and educators and the restructuring of agriculture in Lower Saxony receded into the background.

Weil accused his challenger Althusmann on Saturday of not having conducted a state election campaign, but one against the traffic light coalition in Berlin.

"What a weak picture," criticized the SPD politician.
