Various restrictions under the epidemic have brought about major changes in society, life and work patterns. Today, information and knowledge are readily available and technology is gradually replacing manpower. Creativity and problem-solving skills have become essential skills for the new generation.

In response to the trend of the times, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has launched extended major courses in recent years. Its Faculty of Science also focuses on training students in various aspects such as logical thinking and rational analysis. Together with world-class scientific research, teaching and study opportunities, they have opened up a variety of development paths for students. It can be seen through their grounded and careful course design.

The Faculty of Science has its own research team with rich resources to cultivate professionals

As a research-oriented university, HKUST attaches great importance to both knowledge accumulation and practical experience. Almost every professor in the Faculty of Science has its own research team to carry out brand-new research projects.

In the "2020 Research Assessment Work" of the UGC, a number of research studies of HKUST were rated as "world-leading", which is the highest ratio among all universities in Hong Kong.

Among them, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics and physics are among the top 50 subjects in the 2022 QS Global University Rankings, and five subjects, together with natural sciences, are ranked first in Hong Kong.

Students who stand at the forefront of world scientific research can explore the way forward with a broader vision.

HKUST's chemistry, environmental science, mathematics and physics are ranked in the top 50 of the 2022 QS Global University Subject Rankings; these four subjects and natural sciences all rank first in Hong Kong.

Scientific research and actual combat lead to cultivate undergraduates' problem-solving ability

The field of science is vast and changing with each passing day. The Faculty of Science of HKUST adopts a college system to admit students, allowing freshmen to spend one year freely exploring different scientific fields and self-ability, looking for a future direction, and then taking their favorite major courses from the second year onwards.

The college has five JUPAS admission options, including Science Group A focusing on mathematics and physics, Science Group B focusing on biology and chemistry, or in response to the development of the times, the Science Group A extension of artificial intelligence courses will be launched from 2021.

If you want to engage in scientific research, you can choose the International Research (IRE) course, which has been running for nearly 10 years. You can study research work under the professional guidance of professors in the first year, and start undergraduate research from the summer vacation.

In the second summer vacation, students have more opportunities to participate in the activities of the Institute for Advanced Study of HKUST, study abroad, get in touch with Nobel laureates and other internationally renowned scientists, build diverse perspectives and contacts, and help them apply for overseas postgraduate or doctoral programs after graduation. .

In addition, through the Undergraduate Research Program (UROP), students of other majors can participate in scientific research work early in the undergraduate stage, explore their potential and interest in research, and accumulate problem-solving skills and experience.

International Research (IRE) students can participate in scientific research under the guidance of professors, and are guaranteed to participate in overseas exchanges and summer research internships, and have the opportunity to contact Nobel laureates and world-renowned scientists.

Diversification of the way out of graduation has become a must for scientific research institutions

Due to the comprehensive curriculum content of the Faculty of Science of HKUST, graduates have mastered specialized knowledge, different new technologies, and soft skills when they leave campus. There are many employment options, not limited to the field of science, from investment banks, IT, Even the business, logistics, manufacturing and engineering industries are eager for relevant talents.

In recent years, the rapidly developing biotechnology and medical technology industries have become the destination of many HKUST Science graduates, such as participating in international pharmaceutical companies, health industries, organizations providing biotechnology products or services, and public organizations in related fields.

Of course, some of them are also involved, and even founded biotech start-ups in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.

With the actual scientific research experience and overseas study experience of HKUST, 20% to 25% of graduates choose to study abroad every year, or use the knowledge and foundation acquired in the Faculty of Science to study for master's and doctoral courses in statistics or economics to further expand career path.

Rigil, a 2013 Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) graduate, continued to study at HKUST after graduating, and obtained a Ph.D. in Life Sciences in 2018.

Rigil is currently the project manager of a pharmaceutical factory and a visiting scholar in the Life Sciences Department of HKUST.

Rigil (the first from the right) has always been interested in research. When he was a graduate student, he followed a professor to conduct gene knockout research, and his graduation thesis was published in the journal "Nature".

The picture shows Rigil taking a photo when he went to South Korea's top Korea Institute of Science and Technology for research and exchange during his studies.
