"We have to change that," says Minister of State Florian Herrmann about the still low proportion of women in the CSU leadership team - here in Freising's CineradoPlex cinema with (from left) Ursula Männle, Margarethe Stadlbauer, Anita Meinelt, Silvia Bergmann, Christine Albrecht and Monika Herrmann .

Minister Herrmann wants to improve the quota in his CSU with "gentle pressure".

He said that as part of a film screening about politicians who were discriminated against.

Freising

– In the days of the Bonn government, the clocks ticked very differently when it came to equality: female politicians, if they came to power at all, were thwarted and very often discriminated against behind closed doors and exposed to ridicule on the stage.

In order to clearly depict this misery, Torsten Körner made the extremely impressive documentary film "Die Unbe Biegesamen" in 2021.

The Hans Seidl Foundation has been touring with this film for some time and last week also made a guest appearance at the Freisinger CineradoPlex.

A novelty of the film tour: For the first time, a man sat on the stage for the panel discussion, namely Minister of State Florian Herrmann.

A question he was confronted with: "Why are there still so few women in leadership roles in the CSU?"

"CSU has a long tradition of biting women away"

The answer to this was obviously not easy for Herrmann: "We have to change that - with gentle pressure, for example with a quota." He himself had always tried to bring more women into the party and also to break up the understanding of roles.

"At the New Year's reception, the women always made the rolls.

I didn't want that anymore and got rid of it," said Herrmann.

He was also in favor of "the women's union not only working on women's issues".

Despite the quota, according to Herrmann, attention must still be paid to which woman is suitable for which position.

His reasoning: "Not every woman fits every office." Here, however, there was immediate opposition from the audience.

A spectator said: "It's very interesting that this women's topic is now being introduced by the CSU.

The CSU has a long tradition of biting women away from high offices – like Ilse Aigner.”

One of the many explanations why so few women go into politics at all was provided by Ursula Männle, a former member of the state and federal parliament and former state minister: “Men just do it, while women first discuss it with their husbands at home.” How long they "I've fought to make marital rape a criminal offense for over 20 years," she said.

Männle, who also has a say in the film, knows what she is talking about: "Back then, as women, we used tactical moments in politics across factions so that we could even bring important issues to the table." She also warned urgently: "We have to defend what has been achieved, because it can change again quickly.”

Minister of State wants to strengthen framework conditions

This experience was confirmed by Herrmann, who observed that the pandemic would often cause women to fall back into old role models - as women who traditionally take care of children and homes at home.

For him it is important to strengthen the framework conditions such as flexible kindergarten times.

"What do you take away from this film, Florian?" Margarethe Stadlbauer from the Hanns Seidl Foundation, moderator of the panel discussion, wanted to know in conclusion.

Here Herrmann didn't have to ponder for long and referred to the end of the film, in which the Green Party politician Petra Kelly and Hannelore Kohl, Helmut Kohl's wife, were cinematically contrasted.

"That's interesting, but I have to think about it further," said the minister.
