Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, described the General Assembly's resolution not recognizing referendums on joining Russia as provocative.

Russia Today quoted Nebenzia as saying: A politicized and frankly provocative document was presented, which not only ignores all these facts about turnout, voter turnout and recognition of referendums by foreign observers, but also contains a charge of confrontation that could undermine any efforts in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine, noting that the decision has nothing to do with the protection of international rights and the Charter of the United Nations.

Nebenzia added: It is in this way that Western countries put forward their geopolitical agenda and are trying once again to use the members of the General Assembly as a supportive public.

On Monday, Russia requested a secret ballot on the resolution, with Nebenzia making it clear that this would reduce the number of countries supporting the project, as it would not reflect the identity of the countries that voted for any resolution, however the General Assembly did not support the proposal.
