The Canadian province of British Columbia held a municipal election on October 15, including the mayoral re-election. Vancouver elected the first local Chinese mayor.

Ken Sim, who represents the political party "ABC Vancouver", defeated incumbent Mayor Kennedy Stewart with 85,732 votes (49%) to become the city's first Chinese-American mayor.

Shen Guanjian, 51, was born in Canada, his parents are from Hong Kong, and he worked in business before entering politics.

He ran for mayor for the first time in the last election, in 2018, losing to Stewart by 957 votes, and now he finally has a taste of victory.

A Hong Kong immigrant mayor also appeared in the northern Canadian city of Prince George.

Simon Yu defeated rival former city councilman Terri McConnachie (4,152 votes, 27%) by 6,092 votes (42%).

He became the city's first mayor of color and the first first-generation immigrant to be elected mayor of Prince George.

He came to Canada from Hong Kong in 1975.
