The top conservative politician Ulf Kristersson has been elected the new prime minister of Sweden.

The leader of the Moderates party received the support he needed in a parliamentary vote in Stockholm on Monday.

Kristersson had previously announced that Moderates, Christian Democrats and Liberals would form a government "and work together with the Sweden Democrats in Parliament".

Kristersson is now to be elected prime minister on Monday.

The Sweden Democrats are therefore not a formal part of the government, but at least support the accession to government.

It is the first time that the party can directly influence political decisions.

The left and right camps fought an extremely close race in September's parliamentary elections.

The conservative-right four-party bloc, including the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, won 176 seats, while the left-wing camp led by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson won 173 seats.

Andersson then resigned and will only be in charge of government business until the new government takes over.

The Sweden Democrats had become the second strongest force in the election.

The party has its roots in the Swedish neo-Nazi scene.

Under Åkesson, the party made it into parliament for the first time in 2010.

The party advertises with anti-immigrant resentment, calls for tightening of immigration laws and tougher penalties.
