The scene seems bizarre.
Ukrainian police officers in Kyiv firing rifles and submachine guns into the sky.
The target: an Iranian drone of the type Shahed 136, the Russian designation is Geran-2.
Russia has been attacking large cities in Ukraine with these so-called kamikazed drones for days.
According to the Ukrainian air defense system, most of them can be shot down on approach.
But some make it through.
And they wreak deadly destruction.
Contrary to Russian propaganda, they rarely hit military targets, but primarily civilian facilities such as residential buildings, power plants or waterworks.
In addition, their use is intended to terrorize the population.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is demanding consequences.
Selenskyj: »We shoot down drones.
But the world can and must stop this terror.
When we talk about Ukraine's urgent need for air defense systems, we are talking about lives being taken by the terrorists."
This promotional video from the Iranian leadership shows how the drones can be used.
Your advantage: high mobility - and the estimated 20,000 dollars per piece, very low price compared to conventional rockets.
Attackers often send out a whole swarm of the unmanned aerial vehicles.
Just like the Russians are apparently doing in Ukraine.
To this day, the Iranian government officially denies supplying Shahed drones to Russia.
However, according to Ukrainian sources, the examination of rubble from Kyiv and other cities clearly shows that the drones are of Iranian design.
Therefore, the Ukrainian government is calling for further sanctions against the Iranian regime.
