First drive: Genesis G80 electric

2022-10-19T21:54:42.943Z

The Genesis saloon comes here in its electric version. The operation to implant an electric drive system was extremely successful. Does it justify the price difference from the gasoline version? We set out to find an answer

Where regular cars have a roof, the electric Genesis G80 has something else.

I mean, there is a roof here, of course, but it consists entirely of solar collectors.

The importance of the power generation capacity of this meterage is quite negligible for the end user.

But Genesis says that in multiples of tens or hundreds of thousands of such cars, the global improvement is significant.

For this reason, every electric G80 comes with this roof.

The thing is that said arrangement steals some head space here.

For tall people this will definitely be felt.

And in a car that is all about high comfort and pampering spaciousness - in the other dimensions - a bit out of place if you ask us.

But these collectors, along with the use of recycled materials and more, is part of the elements that should make the electrical statement here more meaningful.

Except for the headroom thing, which obviously varies from person to person, the electric G80 is a very convincing demonstration of capability.

Although this is a platform that was not predestined for electrical use, the transplant surgery was done here properly, and there are almost no signs of it left.

So the G80, even in this version, is a fine saloon car, not one gram less.

This is expressed in the quality of the materials, in the depth and wisdom of the seats, in the long list of accessories and continues to the audio system.

In no corner that the eye or the hand (or the ear) can cover, there is no feeling of economy or mediocrity.

Yes, it's a great compliment to a relatively new manufacturer that is facing old and capable luxury manufacturers.

And of course, the two electric motors here give real added value when it comes to performance.

The responses are immediate and there is no shortage of power as this light car floats from place to place with quiet power.

This enjoyable level of performance, along with being separated from gas stations, are benefits that are hard to ignore.

This Genesis really surrounds its driver with a lot of goodness that is hard to resist.

Even a realistic driving range of 440 km obtained during the varied, air-conditioned and fast test days will put the mind of one at ease.

As mentioned, this is a fairly large car, equipped for fatigue (also in the field of safety, of course) and electric, which means a respectable weight figure (over two tons).

In order to support this weight, the adaptive suspension shoulders a difficult task.

Restraining such a vehicle requires basic rigidity and it is indeed present here.

It's a very comfortable car, but at low speed on broken roads, the performance is less impressive.

Any self-respecting manufacturer should offer an electric option in almost every segment today.

Genesis does the same here and the result makes us remove the hat (and not because of the headroom).

On the other hand, this fashion does not always make sense.

In the case of the G80, it is difficult for us to justify an addition of tens of thousands of shekels compared to the gasoline version of the same car.

But electric fashion is not about logic.

It is here to provide an answer to people who want to declare something about themselves, their way of life or the way they want to present it.

These, will receive an excellent answer to all their luxury-electric-fashionable needs in this Genesis.

The rest would do well to save the required premium and consider the gasoline version.
