A man wields weapons and keeps the police in suspense for hours.

Later, his apartment burns.

The fire brigade can only recover his body.

Dresden – After the large-scale police operation in Dresden, the identity of the dead man has been clarified.

As the Dresden police department announced on Thursday, it is a 26-year-old man.

On Wednesday afternoon he was handling two guns at the window of an apartment.

When officers arrived, he fired multiple times from a pistol and then threw it at officers.

He also threatened to detonate a homemade explosive device if officers entered the apartment.

The apartment later burned down.

The lifeless man was rescued by firefighters in the evening.

The motive for his actions is still unclear, the police said.

The weapons - a blank pistol and an airsoft gun in the form of a submachine gun - were secured.

An autopsy of the body is now to clarify the cause of death.

According to the police, fire experts examined the affected two-room apartment on Thursday morning.

The criminalists assume that the 26-year-old himself set fire to various parts of the apartment.

The apartment burned down completely.

Officials found no evidence of a home-made explosive device.

The police were on duty with 140 officers, including special forces from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office.

When there was a fire, 60 firefighters and rescue workers also arrived.

Six police officers were injured by inhaling smoke from the fire.

Firefighters had to use fire escape hoods to get them down the stairwell from the roof of the building.

According to the fire department, they were treated on site by an ambulance and then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The police had brought the residents of the house to safety and cordoned off the area over a large area.

After the operation, all residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
