2022-10-24T18:50:09.791Z

»Honesty and responsibility – no fairy tales«, that's what Rishi Sunak wants to stand for. In his first speech, the future prime minister is strikingly brief. And strives to present the future of the country as positively as possible.

applause for the winner.

Rishi Sunak becomes the new British Prime Minister.

The politician wins the internal party vote for the race as leader of the conservative Tories - and thereby automatically becomes head of government.

Sunak succeeds Liz Truss, who was forced to vacate her Downing Street post after just seven weeks.

The chaos she caused with her financial policy ideas was too great.

The 42-year-old will thus become the first British head of government of Asian origin and the youngest since 1812. His path to office was also the fastest so far: Sunak became head of government just seven years after his election to the British House of Commons.

“The UK is a great country, but there is no question that we face major economic challenges.

We need stability and unity and the most important thing for me will be to bring our party and our country together - because that is the only way to face the challenges and create a better future for our children and grandchildren."

Rishi Sunak studied economics, later worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs and as a hedge fund manager.

He is a multi-millionaire and by far the richest member of the current and presumably of all parliaments that Britain has had so far.

Sunak has been finance secretary under Boris Johnson since February 13, 2020.

Financially, he is the opposite of his predecessor, Liz Truss.

He pushed through the highest tax increases in decades.

Under him as finance minister, social security contributions rose.

The tax rate is at its highest level since the 1950s.

Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister Designate UK (07/12/2022)

»My message to the party and the people is simple: I have a plan to lead our economy through these times.

We must return to traditional, conservative values.

That means: honesty and responsibility – no fairy tales.«

On July 1, 2022, like many other cabinet members, he resigned in protest at Boris Johnson's style of government - forcing the Prime Minister himself to resign.

Sunak is to ensure a fresh start after the antics of Johnson and the crash of Truss.

He is particularly popular in the conservative faction, but the party base tends to be strangers to the new party leader.

In contrast to the more opportune Truss, Sunak is at least considered to be principled.
