The Serbian army on Wednesday (November 2nd) neutralized a drone that was flying near Serbian military sites in a region of southwestern Serbia close to Kosovo, the Ministry of Defense announced in a press release.

"

The drone, which was flying from the Kopaonik mountain (on the border with Kosovo, editor's note) towards military establishments was shot down by electronic jamming measures

", according to the press release.

The origin of the drone, identified as "

a commercial drone

" by the ministry, has not been announced.

Rising tensions between Belgrade and Pristina

The ministry adds that the army will continue to neutralize drones flying in the no-fly zone on the Serbia-Kosovo border.

The incident comes at a time when tensions between Belgrade and Pristina are on the rise after the Kosovar government's decision to gradually implement its decision on the license plates of Kosovo Serbs from November 1.

The change of these Serbian plates issued by the Belgrade authorities for Kosovar plates demanded by Pristina had provoked an outburst of violence in July.

Belgrade has never recognized the independence proclaimed by its former Albanian-majority province in 2008, a decade after a bloody war that left 13,000 dead, mostly Kosovar Albanians.

Since then, the region has been the scene of episodic frictions.

The approximately 120,000 Kosovo Serbs, a third of whom live in the north of the territory, do not recognize the authority of Pristina, remaining loyal to Belgrade.
