The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) revealed that some of the world's most famous glaciers, including those in the Dolomites in Italy, Yosemite and Yellowstone in the United States and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, will disappear by 2050 due to global warming, regardless of perceptions of global warming. Earth temperature.
The report's author, Taleh Carvalho, said: "The world heritage listed glaciers lose, on average, about 58 billion tons of ice each year, which is equivalent to the total annual volume of water used in France and Spain together, and contributes nearly five percent to the rise in the level of ice. sea waters around the world.
"The most important preventive measure to prevent the massive retreat of glaciers around the world will be to dramatically reduce carbon emissions," Carvalho added, noting that as glacial lakes fill, they can overflow their banks and cause catastrophic flooding downstream.
UNESCO monitors about 18,600 glaciers in 50 of its World Heritage sites, and said that a third of them is expected to disappear by 2050, pointing out that the rest can be saved by keeping global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to levels pre-industrial era.
The glaciers included in the World Heritage List as designated by UNESCO represent about 10 percent of the glacier areas in the world, and include some of the most famous glaciers, whose loss will be clearly noticeable, as they represent pivotal destinations for global tourism.
