Paul Pelosi, 82, has been released from hospital six days after the attack on US politician Nancy Pelosi's husband.
This was announced by the Office of the President of the US House of Representatives on Thursday evening (local time).
Paul Pelosi is still under medical care and is going through a "long recovery process".
An attacker broke into the Pelosi couple's home in San Francisco last Friday night.
He was targeting Nancy Pelosi, who was in the US capital Washington at the time of the attack.
The 42-year-old hit her husband Paul with a hammer when police officers arrived, causing him a fractured skull, among other things.
The federal judiciary charged the attacker on Monday with assault and attempted kidnapping.
The attacker had cable ties, rope and tape with him, said the US Department of Justice.
According to investigators, after his arrest, the man said he had taken Nancy Pelosi hostage and wanted to talk to her.
If the Speaker of the US House of Representatives told the "truth," he would let her go;
if she were "lying," which he assumed she was, he would smash her kneecaps.
Attacker was illegal in US
As the US authorities announced on Thursday, the 42-year-old was illegally in the country.
Accordingly, the Canadian entered the country 14 years ago as a visitor.
In general, Canadian citizens have a six-month period during which they can stay in the United States without a visa.
As has become known, the criminal authorities in San Francisco have filed a request for the alleged attacker to be handed over to immigration authorities after serving his sentence.
After that, an expulsion to Canada is to be expected.
He faces many years in prison in the United States for his attack.
Nancy Pelosi expressed gratitude
Nancy Pelosi expressed her gratitude to emergency responders and hospital staff in the statement Thursday at the release of her husband.
Her family is grateful for the "love, support and prayers from around the world," she added.
Nancy Pelosi, whose constituency is in San Francisco, is one of the most powerful politicians in the United States.
The 82-year-old has been the Speaker of the House for the second time since 2019, making her number three in the state after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
In right-wing circles, she has been hostile to for a long time.
