“After three years of living the “American dream” Gad Elmaleh decides to return to France. He misses his family and his friends. At least, that's the official answer to justify his return… Because Gad didn't (only) come back for his mother's couscous. No, it's another woman he comes to find in Paris… The Virgin Mary”
, sums up the synopsis.
So, halfway between documentary and fiction, this film is inspired by the life of a certain Jean-Marie Lustiger, a former Jewish Catholic cardinal.
Fiction or documentary?
Beyond the themes covered, the production can seem confusing for viewers.
Indeed, we see Gad Elmaleh playing his own role, his job, with his real parents, his real sister - Judith Elmaleh - while telling the story of another.
Comedy club times, just like church times, are real times.
“I didn't take an actor who pretends to play the priest with the faithful who pretend to do mass
,” underlines Gad Elmaleh.
Journalist Émilie Tran Nguyen admits to being truly disturbed by this construction.
"I often wondered if we were watching a documentary or a film
," she insists.
Indeed, on the extract broadcast we see Régine Elmaleh as well as her husband, David Elmaleh (the parents of the humorist Editor's note) at the table lecturing their son.
So, does he play a role or are these real life moments?
“My mother plays well because she plays a line that she invents, that she improvises and which is really the continuity of her thought and her feeling about this diversion from Judaism
,” explains the actor.
So the aspiring actress created her own lines, including this one:
"you change your God, change your family and get adopted."
And as we see in the images broadcast by "C to you", this leaves Gad Elmaleh speechless.
But let's remember... It's only a movie.
