Midterms in Georgia: US Senate will not make a decision until December

Whether Democrats or Republicans will have a majority in the US Senate in the future may not be decided for a few weeks. The reason: A candidate from a third party receives almost two percent of the vote in Georgia.

In Georgia, the race for the hard-fought Senate seat is at a runoff.

Neither the Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock nor his Republican challenger Herschel Walker received more than 50 percent of the votes, as reported by the US broadcasters CNN and NBC, among others.

Due to a special rule, there must now be a runoff in the southern state.

Third candidate requires a runoff

According to the forecasts, Warnock received a good 49 percent of the votes, Walker was just behind.

In Georgia, Chase Oliver was a third candidate – according to forecasts, he was around two percent.

Because of this Libertarian Party candidate, it was previously expected that Warnock and Walker could miss the necessary majority.

The runoff election should then take place in a month on December 6th.

Since the race for the majority is so close, it could very well happen that only this vote will decide the majorities in the upper chamber of Congress.

There was a similar nail-biter two years ago.

Normally, senators in the United States are elected for six-year terms.

The 53-year-old incumbent, Warnock, is standing for re-election because two years ago it was all about completing the term of office of a Republican predecessor who had resigned.

49:48 for Republicans

In addition to Georgia, the results from the states of Arizona and Nevada are still missing in the Senate elections.

The Republicans are currently at 49, the Democrats at 48 out of a total of 100 seats.

Ex-President Donald Trump's party would have to win in both states to achieve a majority in the Senate, regardless of the outcome in Georgia.

As has been the case up to now, 50 seats would be enough for the Democratic Party, since Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris would have the casting vote in the event of a tie.

Former football pro Walker is supported by Trump.

Walker increasingly caused negative headlines in the crucial phase of the election campaign.

Two women have accused the 60-year-old of having pushed them to have an abortion after an affair with Walker.

Walker came out as a categorical opponent of abortion and rejected the allegations.
