The Lebanese National News Agency quoted the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying in a statement today: “The vote of the 157 countries in the Second Committee of the United Nations in favor of the resolution of solidarity with Lebanon in the face of the environmental disaster caused by the Israeli aggression in 2006 is part of the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity,” stressing that it It will continue its efforts, in cooperation with the international community, to oblige the occupying entity, under international laws, to pay its compensation, which is estimated at about 856 million US dollars.

The ministry indicated that despite the progress made in cleaning operations and containing the oil slick that caused the worst environmental disaster in the history of the Mediterranean, the huge economic, health and environmental damages and losses incurred by Lebanon to date have not been addressed yet.

Earlier, 157 member states of the United Nations voted in the Second Committee in favor of the resolution of solidarity with Lebanon in the face of the environmental disaster caused by the 2006 Israeli aggression on oil tanks in the Jiyeh area, south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, calling on the occupation entity to compensate for the damages of that disaster.
