Celtic gold coins worth millions of euros were stolen from a German museum on Tuesday (22 November).
Employees of the museum in Manching, in the south of the country, discovered in the morning that the "
showcase was broken
" and the treasure missing, local police told AFP.
The disappearance of the treasure is a "
complete disaster
" for the Bavarian city, reacted the mayor of Manching, Herbert Nerb, interviewed by the
Sueddeutsche Zeitung
.
He mentioned the fact that the thieves had cut the telephone lines to thwart security and operate quietly, which the police would not confirm.
This collection of over 450 gold coins was a centerpiece of the Celtic and Roman Art Museum in Manching.
Discovered in 1999, some pieces dated back to "
100 years BC
" and the loot amounted to "
several million euros
", according to the police.
