The energy market is being warned: there is no techno-economic programming to stop electricity generation on Shabbat.
According to Amit Segal's publication on News 12 this evening (Monday), one of the clauses in the coalition agreement between Likud and Torah Judaism is the cessation of electricity generation on Shabbat.
This is a far-reaching demand that even if it can be implemented, it could reach astronomical amounts and affect every citizen in Israel.
We will explain: Stopping electricity production on Shabbat requires the establishment of electricity storage batteries that can supply the full consumption during Shabbat.
Chen Herzog, Bdo's Chief Economist, said this evening in a conversation with "Israel Hayom": "The scope of the investment required to build batteries that will allow production to stop on Shabbat is a huge cost of over NIS 300 billion. This is beyond the energy losses in the storage process and the costs of shutting down and restarting power plants every week." .

Herzog adds: "Furthermore, in an economy where the production of renewable energies is increasing, stopping the production of electricity is practically impossible since it is not possible to 'turn off the sun' and the solar panels continue to produce electricity even on Shabbat."
We will remind you that Israel is already facing the increase in electricity consumption and only this summer the Director General of the Ministry of Finance Ram Blinkov warned that if no new power plants are built, Israel could face a shortage of electricity.
The increase in electricity consumption in Israel is due to the constant increase in the consumption volumes of the Israeli market, as well as the diversion of fuels from the private and public transportation sector from polluting fuels to electrical activity.
According to BDO data, in 2022 there was an increase of about 4% compared to 2021.
In this context, we note that according to a report in the British "Telegraph", Switzerland is already considering limiting the use of electric vehicles as an emergency measure in the event of a lack of electricity supply this coming winter.
