War in Ukraine: the difficult estimate of the damage attributable to Russian aggression

A team made up of around thirty Ukrainian economists is working to measure the amount of damage, crucial data for the future reconstruction of the devastated country.

Nearly 7% of the country's living space, nearly 15% of the roads, a fifth of the medical infrastructure, 2,000 schools and universities as well as 188,000 vehicles damaged or destroyed: the extent of the damage caused by Russia is abysmal.

In kyiv, a team of economists and volunteers is trying to make an accurate estimate.

Before the war, Daryna Marchak worked on tax and government budget issues at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE).

She fled the capital on February 26 for the west of the country and immediately began working online with her colleagues on a project with the clear name: “Russia will pay”

"It may seem a bit early, but we thought very quickly that the state would need to estimate the extent of the destruction to rebuild," the

economist, who has since become deputy minister of social affairs.

“We need to have a figure to know how much Russia owes us.”
