Bordeaux: the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design closes its doors for three years of work

The Hôtel de Lalande will no longer be open to the public from January 8, 2023 but will continue to provide cultural programming outside the walls.

Last weeks to go to the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Madd) in Bordeaux.

This emblematic place in downtown Bordeaux, a few minutes from Place Pey Berland, will close its doors to the public on January 8, 2023, in order to carry out "

a major restructuring, restoration and rehabilitation project

".

The cost is estimated at 13.71 million euros, including 7.21 million financed by the city of Bordeaux, 4.5 million by the State and 2 million by sponsorship.

This project “

will bring together the two buildings of the museum, classified as historical monuments since 2018

”, specifies the town hall of Bordeaux.

A renovation carried out by the municipality and presented as responding "

to the environmental and heritage issues involved

in the restoration and rehabilitation

of the former prison and an energy renovation of the Hôtel de Lalande

", while keeping the objective "

of preserve the very strong and particular atmosphere of each of the two buildings, their identity and their architectural interest

”.

Programming outside the walls for three years

The mansion that houses the museum, built between 1775 and 1779, was bought by the city in 1880 to install the police services there.

A prison was then built behind the building, on the site of the garden.

From 1924 a museum of ancient art moved there, before becoming the museum of decorative arts in 1955. In 1984, the place was redesigned to evoke "

a rich aristocratic residence, emblematic of the Bordeaux Age of Lights

", and is used as a reserve for collections.

In 2013, the museum changed its name to also devote itself to design.

The main building will be renovated "

by adapting it to the current uses of a contemporary museum, in an eco-responsible approach rather than creating an ex nihilo building

", but the work will essentially focus on the former prison, which will be connected to the heat.

The public reception and circulation areas between the two buildings will also be refurbished and brought up to accessibility standards.

In addition, "

the project provides for the use of recyclable and biosourced materials, significant work will be done on insulation and to allow significant access to natural light and constant natural ventilation

".

At the end of this project, a new visit route will be presented, to "

highlight the strong points of the collection, the questions associating memory and heritage, representations and female artists

".

Throughout the duration of the works, the museum “

will pursue its mission

”, by offering “

a rich program in physics in the city, on the territory and in digital

”.
