The media in Austria reported in the evening about a large avalanche in the area of the town of Lech, where there is a popular ski resort in the west of the country.
At least one person is being rescued from piles of snow but about 10 more are believed to be buried as of the first hours after the avalanche, which occurred around 3pm local time.
Immediately after the avalanche, which occurred on Christmas in an area where there is a special style of skiing, helicopters and search units were launched to locate more survivors.
"We are doing everything to get the winter athletes," the municipality of Lech said.
At least 100 people are involved in the search, and according to local reports, the public is being urged to hand in headlamps to help them see in the difficult night conditions.
