The police and gendarmerie services recorded 684 victims who attempted suicide or committed suicide following the harassment of their spouse or ex-spouse in 2021. A massive phenomenon, but a data that is not very visible in the fight reports against domestic violence.
This figure, from the statistical service of the Ministry of the Interior, only appears in the last letter from the National Observatory on Violence Against Women, published at the end of November.
“It is probably not put forward because it inflates the statistics of mortality linked to domestic violence
.
Including it in the annual report of feminicides would amount to tripling this figure,
notes Yael Mellul, president of the association Femme et libre and former lawyer specializing in domestic violence.
Unfortunately, we do not distinguish between suicide attempts and suicides.
