Alexandre de Moraes, a member of the Brazilian Supreme Court, determined on Wednesday the temporary suspension of the possession of firearms in the Federal District.

Its transport and that of ammunition by collectors, hunters and shooting fans will not be allowed either.

The decision was motivated after the escalation of violence that occurred on December 24 when the now detained George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, with the help of other people, tried to explode an explosive device that was aimed at a kerosene transport truck parked in the vicinity of the Brasilia Airport.

The purpose of the measure is to ensure the security of the inauguration ceremony to be held in the Brazilian capital on January 1, when the transfer of power between Jair Bolsonaro and President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will take place.

From the afternoon of December 28 and until January 2, 2023, any person who does not comply with this determination will incur the crime of illegally carrying a weapon.
