A 6-year-old student was arrested Friday after opening fire in a Virginia elementary school classroom and seriously injuring a teacher, police and the local public school system reported.
The shooting occurred at
Richneck Elementary School
, in the city of Newport News.
Neither the boy nor the teacher have been identified.
"There has been a shooting incident at Richneck Elementary School. A teacher was injured and was transported to a local hospital. All students are safe. The perpetrator is in police custody," the school system said in a Facebook post. Newport News Publications.
Three victims of the shooting in Uvalde made it out alive and later died.

The shooting occurred after an altercation in a first-grade classroom, police and school officials said.
No students were injured, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said.
The police explained that
the victim, in his 30s, was seriously injured
and is receiving treatment, although the nature of the injuries was not specified.
"The teacher's injuries are believed to be life-threatening," police said in a statement in the afternoon.
"The investigation is ongoing."
