Spain breaks its record of requests for asylum and refuge in 2022

2023-01-12T20:57:01.864Z

Almost 119,000 people applied for international protection last year, more than half of them citizens of Venezuela and Colombia. The figure does not include the 161,037 people who requested protection for the invasion of Ukraine by Russia

The Asylum and Refuge Office (OAR) received a total of 118,842 applications for international protection last year in 2022, but only granted 35,159, the vast majority of them to people from Venezuela, a country followed at a long distance by Mali, according to reported yesterday the Ministry of the Interior, on which the agency depends.

This is the highest number of requests since there are records, and is 81.5% higher than last year's claims.

Venezuela is in the lead in all magnitudes: 45,748 petitions and 20,580 resolved favorably for humanitarian reasons, given the economic, political, and social situation in the country headed by Nicolás Maduro.

The second country with the most protections granted is Mali, where threats from ISIS and other terrorist groups expel the population.

The figure does not include the 161.

The number of requests for protection has skyrocketed to recover the path of increase that was broken by the pandemic.

In 2019, 118,446 requests were submitted, while the year the covid arrived, 88,826 were filed, and last year the figure was 65,482.

The pandemic also made it easier for OAR officials to resolve a number of files greater than the number of petitions, something that this year has been broken.

By nationality, the main countries of origin of applicants for international protection in 2022 have been Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Morocco.

Thus, of the 118,842, 101,352 have been resolved, half with unfavorable results (51,838).

On the other hand, 6,830 refugee statutes and 7,405 subsidiary protections were granted (neither return nor expulsion, given the risk to life for the person if they return to their country of origin).

Mali (4,883 protections granted), Afghanistan (1,535), Ukraine (1,337) and Syria (1,297) cover this type of protection.

Afghanistan is the country that has received the highest rate of protection if it is related to the demands, followed by Burkina Faso

The other formula is to allow the permanence in Spain for "humanitarian reasons".

The OAR gave 20,924 of these protections, and almost all of them were for people who fled from Venezuela (20,50) and very few for people from Colombia (193).

In fact, this last country is, in absolute numbers, the one that submitted the most applications in 2022: 36,012.

In addition to processing requests for international protection, during 2022 the Asylum and Refuge Office has granted 161,037 requests for temporary protection to those displaced by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Most of the applicants (54%) were men, between 18 and 34 years old (49.68%), who submitted their application after entering national territory.

By place of submission, the Community of Madrid, with 47,658 applications, heads the list of autonomous communities with the highest number of applications, followed by Andalusia (11,722) and Catalonia (10,396).
