The Paris city authorities announced today the closure of a train station, following the outbreak of an artificial fire that caused an almost complete halt to the movement of transport heading to the east of the French capital.
"The fire was deliberately started," a spokeswoman for the French railway company told AFP, adding: "The train movement from the Gare de Lys station was stopped all day, except for a few local services."
For his part, French Transport Minister Clement Bonn said: “48 cable groups comprising 600 individual electric cables were destroyed,” describing the incident as “an act of sabotage.”
The company had filed a criminal complaint with the police, and the identity of the perpetrators or their goal of targeting an important part of the infrastructure has not yet been identified.
