Ardern, 42, has stated that she will not leave politics and that she will continue to work in the New Zealand Labor Party as a deputy and she has added that she will dedicate herself to the family, especially motherhood.
The prime minister, who was pregnant in the first year of her term, has stated on different occasions that she now wants to dedicate herself to the beginning of the school phase of her four-year-old daughter.
The last public act of politics had not been planned.
During a Maori event in honor of Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana, founder of a religious and political movement in the Pacific nation, Ardern thanked his country for the opportunities he had as head of state.
“My overall experience in this job for New Zealand and New Zealanders has been one of love, empathy and kindness,” she said.
The prime minister has denied that the cause of her resignation was the harassment and criticism suffered through social networks in recent years.
"I want you to know that I leave with a greater love and affection for New Zealand and its people than when I started," she added.
Ardern, since she was elected Prime Minister in 2017, has stood out on the international scene for her progressiveness and her empathy and has built her political figure on the basis of compassion.
The politician led the country throughout the covid-19 pandemic, with her performance in the face of various natural disasters and in the terrorist attack on a supermarket in 2021. Chris Hipkins, the new leader of the Labor Party, will be named the country's new prime minister this Wednesday.
