About three days after a Chinese spy balloon that entered the US was intercepted by an American plane, more details about the scope of the phenomenon around the world are being revealed.
American officials told the "New York Times" that apparently this balloon, as well as other balloons that have passed through the skies of the United States in recent years, were launched as part of the Chinese attempt to gather information about the military capabilities of countries in the world. These are balloons that can be controlled remotely.
The sources said that this is the official assessment of the American intelligence community, which believes that it is a world-wide plan of which the balloons are only a part.
The goal: to get information about the military capabilities of countries in case of any conflict or tension.
The "Washington Post" reported that the State Department had already started updating countries that were apparently also the target of the balloons.
These include Japan, Vietnam, India and the Philippines.
"Balloons have advantages over satellites that fly around the world in regular patterns," the sources told the newspaper.
"The balloons can circle closer to the ground and move along with the winds, so their movement is not easy to predict for armies and intelligence agencies, unlike the fixed and predictable path of satellites," they emphasized, noting that the balloons can evade radars.
Also, they can stay over a certain area, unlike satellites that are in constant motion.
Also, the cameras that can be installed on them provide clearer images than satellite information and you can also put collection means on them that cannot be installed on satellites in space.
