The time of childish provocations is left behind

The Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations takes stock of the first 40 days of Lula's government and the 'transformation' of foreign policy.

The journey began in Buenos Aires, with the presidential visit in January, and has as its most recent stopover the

White House

.

In just 40 days, President Lula

's foreign policy

has already undergone a major transformation, or rather a return to Brazil's best diplomatic traditions.

The presidential visits thus far demonstrate this

commitment to profound change

.

Last Friday's working meeting at the White House not only relaunched the bilateral relationship with the US at the highest level.

I participated in all the meetings, and the harmony between Presidents Lula and

Joe Biden

on the importance of restoring bilateral dialogue and cooperating on crucial issues for both societies was clear.

The defense of democracy and the role of the two countries in the global debate on climate change are among the shared priorities, in addition to deepening economic ties.

The announcement, by the Biden government, of its adhesion as a contributor to the Amazon Fund, in which Germany and Norway already participate, and which was frozen in the previous administration, is a very significant milestone.

And also a recognition to the Lula government for its fight against environmental crime, from the first day of his new administration.

If it were not for that determination, Brazilians and international public opinion would not be aware today of the tragedy of the native Ianomami communities in the Amazon, which occurred in recent years, without the previous government fulfilling its obligation to protect both those communities and the rivers and trees of the region.

But the Ianomami are no longer abandoned: since January they have been receiving full support from the government, while we are freeing their reserves from the invaders who have polluted their waters and depredated part of the forest.

In the end, as Lula had already stressed as president-elect in Egypt, during COP 27, last November, our commitment to the environment is an absolute and non-negotiable priority.

Already in the field of international relations, also in Egypt, the president declared that

Brazil is back in the world

, after recent years of isolation and diplomatic flat earthing.

And the region and the world have welcomed us with open arms, a fact already evidenced by the expressive presence of leaders at Lula's inauguration.

Since then, the Brazilian president has participated in 16 face-to-face meetings with heads of state and government, two of them with President

Alberto Fernández

.

He also held meetings, during the CELAC summit, with leaders of the European Union and international organizations such as the FAO.

I myself, in addition to participating in the presidential agenda, held another 25 meetings and 14 telephone calls with ministers, heads of state and government, and leaders of international organizations.

I have also received, in Brasilia, on official visits, the foreign ministers of Japan, Greece and France.

This intense initial effort had the objective of rebuilding bridges damaged by the previous government, beginning with priority for the neighboring countries and for the other Latin American countries, and then for the African continent and for protagonists such as the United States, China and the European Union.

Gone are the days of childish provocations to our most important partners, as happened with Argentina on more than one occasion.

The good tradition of Brazilian foreign policy

is back

, and the international community already recognizes the changes in direction determined, after all, by the Brazilian people at the polls.

The bridges we are trying to rebuild are a new starting point.

And they intend not only to recover accumulated losses, but also to make diplomacy once again an effective tool in favor of development, particularly with regard to regional integration, an objective that is part of our 1988 Constitution.

With permanent dialogue with our society and with the other strategic partners, Brazil is already preparing to exercise the protempore Presidency of Mercosur, in the second semester, and the Presidency of the G20, in 2024.

The first presidential visits, to Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Washington, pave the way for the long-awaited return of Brazil to the region and the world.
