US President Joe Biden was due to receive Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday in San Diego, California, aboard a nuclear submarine to announce details of the plan to to supply submersibles to Australia as part of the Aukus.
Eighteen months after the surprise announcement of this triple naval alliance in the Pacific, which had put an end without much diplomacy to a contract between Australia and France, and raised protests from China, the three countries have ended by agreeing on a complex plan spanning at least three decades.
According to the agreement, revealed last Wednesday by the Reuters agency, the Australian navy should eventually be equipped with a British-designed nuclear-powered submarine, built in Australian shipyards with significant American technological assistance.
