More and more wolves are settling in Bavaria.

Several packs have already been proven.

Now a wolf is roaming around near Aschaffenburg, the district office is giving tips.

Aschaffenburg – For some they are a cause for concern: the wolves in Bavaria.

In the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the alpine farmers are desperate, the fear of livestock being killed in the coming grazing season is great.

District administrator Anton Speer (free voters) therefore submitted an application for removal, i.e. for shooting, a few weeks ago.

Shortly thereafter, the Bavarian State Office for the Environment confirmed to our editorial team that a pair of wolves had settled in the region.

Once they breed, the family is considered a pack.

Wolves in Bavaria: So far there have been nine confirmed territories – probably ten soon?

A few packs have already settled down, especially in northern Bavaria.

On the website of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment, nine territories of wolves in Bavaria have been confirmed so far.

This means a wolf has been detected over a period of more than six months or a male wolf and a female wolf have marked their territory together.

Only then is a wolf or a pair of wolves considered to be site-loyal.

Wolves have been detected in the following regions:

  • Allgäu Alps:

Male wolf detected several times since 2018.

  • Altmühltal:

A female wolf has been detected several times since 2020, since autumn some photo evidence together with a male wolf.

  • Ruda (Northern Bavarian Forest):

Originally a male wolf with his pup, now two adult animals and six pups are resident.

  • Manteler Forst:

Evidence of female and male wolves and pups.

The local male (originally from Veldensteiner Forst) died in December 2021 in a traffic accident.

  • Grafenwöhr:

Two wolves, female and male, proven several times.

They are considered to be local.

  • Staffelsee-West:

    Latest confirmed territory.

In March 2023, a stable pair of wolves was identified through urine in the snow.

  • Veldenstein Forest:

    Probably the largest wolf territory.

Numerous records of over ten different wolves, some from the same pack.

  • Wildflecken:

Loyal pair of wolves with six puppies.

Throughout Germany, this territory is counted in Hesse.

  • Zella-Rhön:

    Transnational territory to Thuringia.

A female wolf must have mated with a dog there.

"A killing of the offspring is planned."

In addition to the female wolf and its hybrid offspring and the wolf pack in Wildflecken, there are apparently other wolves roaming through Lower Franconia.

According to the district office, there have been repeated sightings of wolves in the Aschaffenburg district in the past few days, “primarily by wildlife cameras in the area near Westerngrund and Kleinkahl.” It is still unclear from which pack or region he comes.

"At the moment, however, it can be assumed that the wolf will remain in the region, at least for the time being." So there could soon be a tenth territory in Bavaria.

When encountering wolves: the district office gives tips on how to behave

According to the district office, an encounter between humans and wolves is rather unlikely.

If it should happen anyway, it is important to remain calm.

Those affected should “keep their distance, but not run away.” This gives the wolf the opportunity to retreat.

"As long as the wolf doesn't retreat and you don't feel comfortable with the situation, it's advisable to speak loudly, gesture or clap," explains the Aschaffenburg district office.

"In the unlikely event that the wolf approaches, you should stand still and stand up." It tends to be recommended to take a step forward rather than back.
