Peru requested the international capture of a Shining Path terrorist who is in Argentina

2023-04-11T20:23:33.912Z

This is Martha Huatay, who entered the country in June of last year. She is accused of being the author of an attack that occurred in Lima in 1992, in which 25 people died.

Argentine Interpol recently received from its Peruvian counterpart the

international arrest warrant

for Martha Huatay, a

veteran Shining Path terrorist

who has been

in Argentina since last year.

According to Clarín

learned

from high sources, between

Wednesday and Thursday they should detain her for extradition purposes

, although her judicial future is uncertain, since the woman is 80 years old.

It is presumed that she is in the AMBA since she legally left Peru and she legally entered Argentina in June 2022.

Huatay is one of the emblematic leaders of the organization that terrorized Peru with its wave of attacks and deaths in the eighties and nineties.

Although the woman

served a 25-year prison sentence

for the judicial process for acts of terrorism against the entire leadership of Sendero, including its deceased leader Abimael Guzmán, the Public Ministry of Peru recently

opened a new process

for her, as ringleader of the devastating attack on Tarata street.

That attack took place on

July 16, 1992

in the Lima neighborhood of Miraflores.

Sendero sought to blow up the Banco de Crédito del Perú.

But the terrorists could not leave the car in front of the credit office and they parked the vehicle with 250 kilos of explosives a few meters away, on Tarata street.

Twenty-five people died, 200 were injured, and there were significant losses in homes, businesses, and automobiles

in what was one of Sendero's worst attacks.

She entered Argentina in June 2022. Now Peru is asking for her capture and extradition

At the time, Peru's anti-terrorism prosecutor, Milko Ruiz, who deals with this type of complex crime, filed a complaint.

This was taken by the Prosecutor's Office, which requested the preventive detention of Huatay.

At the beginning of last April, the Judiciary reported that the Seventh Preparatory Investigation Court declared the request of the prosecutor's office for preventive detention for the woman well founded.

The

judge processed it and now his international capture was requested, which has already been received by Argentine Interpol

.

Known in her years of violence as

"Comrade Rosa"

Huatay is a lawyer born in Trujillo, in 1943.

Imprisoned in 1992 for the crime of terrorism, she was released on October 16, 2017, after serving 25 years of her sentence.

Now accused of the attack on Tarata street,

the Public Ministry requested life imprisonment against her,

while the Judiciary accepted a request for 3.7 million soles (US$ 973,326) for civil compensation for the attack.

The difference with her situation in 1992 is that she was accused as a member of Sendero Luminoso with the possibility of being released once the sentence has been completed.

She is now being sought for the Tarata case, in which she was initially not included.

But one of those sentenced for that attack said that the woman was

the leader of the Socorro Popular group,

an arm of the Shining Path that carried out the attack in Miraflores.

And for that she would receive a life sentence, although her scope is unknown here due to her age.

In Argentina there is another former Sendero terrorist.

This is the former dancer Maritza Garrido-Leca, also a member of the group.

She entered the country in July 2022, and unlike Huatay, she requested political refuge from CONARE.

Important sources in the Argentine government told

Clarín

that it has not yet been granted.

But his situation is less complicated.
