A person has been detained in the United States in connection with the leak of classified Pentagon documents, the biggest leak of confidential material since the WikiLeaks scandal in 2010, according to officials quoted by US media.
This is Jack Teixeira, 21 years old and assigned to the intelligence department of the Air National Guard in the State of Massachusetts.
Images broadcast by the CNN television network show vehicles of the US security forces surrounding a house in that State;
a person in a gray T-shirt and red shorts appears handcuffed and surrounded by officers.
The leaked documents concern above all the war in Ukraine, but also other hot spots in the world, from China to the Middle East.
Its publication, and the content of the material released, have sparked tensions between Washington and some of its allies, such as Israel or South Korea.
Some of those texts were marked with the “NOFORN” tag, indicating that the information was so sensitive that it should not be shared with foreigners.
From Ireland, where he is on an official trip, US President Joe Biden has shown little concern about the leak itself.
"I am concerned that it has happened," he has declared;
but the documents, he has stressed, contain outdated information: "there is nothing current that I am aware of."
