Franco-French imbroglio on the export of cereals

DECRYPTION - A decision by ANSES could prevent our cereal producers from selling their grain in Africa from April 25.

There are less than two weeks to find a solution.

From April 25, France risks no longer having the right to export its cereals outside the European Union.

On this date, phosphine, an insecticide based on aluminum phosphide which is used to disinfect the holds of boats, will no longer be authorized in France.

A decision by the National Food Safety Agency (Anses), published on October 26, made it illegal when it is “

in direct contact with cereals

”.

This is the case when it is dispersed in the holds, used in the form of tablets disintegrating in the air in the grains and creating a fumigation.

At stake, 11.5 million tonnes of cereals annually, a market of 3.8 billion euros.

This represents a quarter of French production, with Algeria (38% of French exports) and Morocco (14%) being the main customers.
