The Supreme Court this Friday temporarily granted a request from the Department of Justice and a pharmaceutical company not to take effect a decision by a Texas federal judge that suspended the approval of mifepristone, the drug used in abortion pills, limiting its access throughout the country.
The order of Judge Samuel Alito pauses the decision of federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk until midnight on April 19.
This period will give the judges time to consider what the next steps are, he said.
Kacsmaryk last week suspended the drug's approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more than 20 years ago and ordered it removed from the market, following a lawsuit brought by an anti-abortion coalition backed by by a religious group.

Both the Department of Justice and the pharmaceutical company that produces and markets mifepristone, Danco Laboratories, had requested the emergency intervention of the Supreme Court in the case, given the damage that the decision would imply for millions of women, as well as for the value scientist from the FDA judgment and the company's commercial interests.
