A day after the death of Maidan Keller, a 16-year-old boy who was hospitalized following the use of an electronic cigarette, 70 heads of health and medical organizations today (Sunday) contacted some of the heads of the Knesset committees demanding the establishment of a "comprehensive national program to prevent the initiation of smoking among children and teenagers".



In a letter addressed to Finance Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni, Health Committee Chairman Ariel Boso, Child Rights Committee Chairman MK Eli Dellal, Drug and Alcohol Abuse Committee Chairman Boaz Bismuth and Youth Affairs Committee Chairman Naama For Zimi, the health and medical organizations called for an emergency discussion on the issue of smoking initiation among children and teenagers.



"We urge you to urgently convene an emergency discussion and demand that the Ministry of Health present a comprehensive national action plan to prevent the initiation of smoking among children and teenagers.

According to them, "the tax on electronic cigarettes should be immediately compared to the tax on cigarettes, since taxation has been proven to be the most effective strategy to combat smoking."



"Unfortunately, a 16-year-old boy died last night at Schneider Hospital. It is known that the boy was hospitalized as a result of using an electronic cigarette. This is a sad case that reinforces the claim that an electronic cigarette is not a harmless pastime, but a dangerous and addictive product. Using an electronic cigarette may cause, among other things, to changes in blood vessels and, in some cases, to severe and irreversible lung damage. Recent studies also indicate genetic changes associated with the development of cancerous tumors in the oral cavity, lungs and bladder among users."
